WILD AND SCENIC RIVERS

RIVER PERMITS AND INFORMATION

How to Navigate This Page

This page includes permits and information that you will need to collect data for this project.
  • Section 1 provides an overview your permit responsibilities.
  • Section 2 includes all the permits, grouped by state the rivers are in.
  • Section 3 is a short email template you may use if your permit requires you to notify local land managers.

Section 1: Permitting Information

As a Wild and Scenic Rivers volunteer, you may be required to carry a research permit or a letter of authorization. Scroll down to find a list of permits and details for rivers by state.

Adventure Scientists is obtaining all of the necessary permits — so all you’ll need to do is find the permit necessary for the river you are going to. We’ve laid out everything you need to know about permits below. Never collect data in an area in which we do not have a permit.

If you have any questions or concerns about using a permit, don’t hesitate to reach out to us at rivers@adventurescientists.org.

Conditions that Apply to All Permits

  • All volunteers are required to carry a copy of the relevant permit while collecting data. Permits can be downloaded below.
  • Some permits require volunteers to notify land managers at least one to two weeks ahead of data collection.

Section 2: Permits and Information on Specific Rivers

Below we’ve provided river-specific trip planning details and a comprehensive list of all the permits organized by state. To view and download available resources and permits, click the “+” sign associated with the state you are collecting data from.

Overarching permits:
If collecting data on BLM rivers, download this letter of support and carry with you while collecting data.

If collecting data on USFS rivers, download this participating agreement and carry with you while collecting data.
