Project Pressure

Project Pressure – Documenting the world’s glaciers

The mission of Project Pressure  is to document, archive and share the world’s vanishing and receding glaciers.

Project Pressure is currently generating a participatory digital platform, MELT (Mass Engagement and Listing Technology).

You can get involved!
On MELT, scientists, artists, education professionals and the public will upload their own photos. Year by  year comparisons will allow for glacier fluctuations to be established and tracked, a tool used by scientists for calculating mass balances or change in size.

Why?
MELT will create long-lasting scientific value with minimal expertise needed. This project documents a changing planet, provides future generation with a visual archive of the way the world was, and underscores the importance of preserving the balance of the world’s ecosystem.

Here’s what we need
Volunteers participate by uploading their images of glaciers to the Project Pressure archive. These photos then become part of a longitudinal study documenting glacier change over time.

How will this data be used?
MELT can be used to better visualize climate change, for scientific research, climate change education, and visual arts communication. A beta version of MELT has been built, it can’t show the timelines, but will give you an idea – have a look. http://wearewhatwedo.org/melt-test/en

Scientific accuracy is ensured by on-going collaboration with scientists and scientific bodies such as National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the World Glacier Monitoring Service (WGMS). Project Pressure was officially recognised as an official contributor to the Global Terrestrial Network for Glaciers (GTN-G) in 2011 based on its pilot project.
