Adventure for Conservation:

Volunteer Field Day at Boreal Mountain Resort

Join Woodward and Adventure Scientists for a Volunteer Field Day at Woodward Tahoe (Boreal Mountain)

When: Friday, July 18 and Saturday, July 19, 2025
Location: Boreal Mountain Resort (Meet here)

Help Protect Tahoe’s Wild Places — Join a Volunteer Field Day!

Love to hike, bike, run, or climb in Tahoe’s incredible backcountry? Put your miles to work for science and help protect the biodiversity that makes this place so special.

We’re looking for adventurous volunteers to join the team. You’ll get a quick training, all the tools you need, and then head out on the trails to explore, collect insect samples, and contribute to important conservation science.

Why insects? They’re a vital part of Tahoe’s ecosystems — and yet, we know surprisingly little about the species living here. Your samples will help scientists track biodiversity in remote areas that would otherwise go unstudied.

This event is part of Adventure Scientists’ California Biodiversity Project, in partnership with California Institute for Biodiversity, UC Santa Cruz, and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.

No experience needed — just bring your love of the outdoors and curiosity. All equipment is provided, free of charge.

What to Expect:

Friday, July 18, 2025 | 12:00 PM – 8:00 PM

Come meet the Adventure Scientists team at Play Forever Friday! We’ll have a table set up to share more information about the California Biodiversity project. Once you pass the quick training, we’ll hand out some sampling equipment for you to get out and go on an adventure. No registration required.

Saturday, July 19th, 2025 | 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM
We have three in-person training sessions! Pick the time that works for you! Come bike, hike, and explore while collecting insect samples in the Tahoe National Forest!

8:30 AM – Training #1 + Guided Field Outing
Join us early for hands-on training followed by a guided outing with Adventure Scientists staff. Perfect for first-timers or anyone wanting extra guidance. Light breakfast and sampling equipment provided.

10:00 AM – Training #2 (Just Training)
Meet in small groups for a 30-minute training session. Then head out on your own to sample and return to Woodward before 5:00 pm to drop off your samples and celebrate! Snacks and sampling equipment provided.

11:30 AM – Training #3 (Just Training)
Same format as above—a short 30-minute training, then independent sampling. Ideal for later risers! Snacks and sampling equipment provided.

4:00 PM – Volunteer Meet-Up + Sample Return + Optional Panel Discussion
Head back to the main event space for some well-earned refreshments, turn in your samples, and stick around for a fun conversation with Calirado Kid, Adam Kimble, and Gabrielle Katanic, outdoor enthusiasts, and Adventure Scientists Volunteers.
