Adventure Scientists and Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy
Two exciting opportunities to join Adventure Scientists and Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy for a Volunteer Field Day and Hike!
Join us for a volunteer field day to collect insects and help protect California’s unique biodiversity! Volunteers will receive training and equipment before heading into Forrestal Nature Reserve to collect insect samples. California is one of 36 global biodiversity hotspots—regions rich in species but facing serious threats from climate change, wildfires, and habitat loss. Gathering data on biodiversity is essential for guiding conservation action. By volunteering, you can be part of the solution!
This event is part of Adventure Scientists’ California Biodiversity Project, in partnership with the California Institute for Biodiversity, UC Santa Cruz, and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. With volunteer support, we’re collecting insect data across a wide region—areas too remote or expensive for scientists to access alone. No experience is necessary. Toolkits and breakfast will be provided free of charge! RSVP now to reserve your spot. Find more details on the project here.
What to Expect on Field Day:
9:00 AM – 10:00 AM: Start the day with some breakfast, and learn about the project research and how you’ll be involved! We will go over:
- How to properly collect and document biodiversity data
- Which trails are permitted for sampling
- Techniques for proper insect sampling
- How your data contributes to conservation efforts
10:00 AM – 1:00 PM: Head into the field to collect insect samples in a guided group or in your own small group.
1:00 PM – 1:30 PM: Celebrate your impact and drop off samples.
