WILD AND SCENIC RIVERS

VOLUNTEER APPLICATION

Where will you go?

Use the map below to see if this project needs data on a river you’d like to visit. Find the volunteer application below.

Don’t see your favorite river?

Many Wild and Scenic rivers are already well managed by local groups and stewards. These rivers generally have data about water quality already, but many of the local groups run their own monitoring and data collection. The Adventure Scientists project aims to fill critical data gaps in the Wild and Scenic Rivers system, so we’re thrilled by the work already done by these organizations.

Check out this spreadsheet to learn about the stewards of your river, as well as contacts that can help you get involved in the water quality monitoring there.

Partner Information

Adventure Scientists discourages solo adventuring. If you apply to collect data solo, we highly encourage you to always bring one other person with you into the field. Please also be aware that priority will be given to applicants who have at least one dedicated partner.

Groups of four or more are asked to split up. If you're a raft guide, select just yourself.

The partner(s) you list below will be emailed a different application form(s). They must complete these separate applications for your team to be eligible.
Please DO NOT list yourself here. This information is for your partners only!

Location and Technology Requirements

Location Information

*Repeated sampling helps capture important temporal variation in water quality. If you are passing through an area but still want to collect samples, then indicate a single trip.

River Selection
What river(s) are you planning on visiting? We are prioritizing rivers with an unassessed/unknown status this year. Rivers with an impaired or good status will be surveyed on a case by case basis. You MUST consult BOTH the map and the spreadsheet of rivers available for data collection on the webpage where you are applying before answering this question!

Smartphone Requirements

This project requires you to record and upload data using a mobile app. All volunteers must have at least an iPhone 6 or equivalent Android model (e.g. Samsung Galaxy S6) to ensure the highest quality data. If you do not have a suitable smartphone or tablet we can loan you one. Contact us at rivers@adventurescientists.org.
Example: Samsung Galaxy S7

Tell us more about yourself

Our mission is to collect the highest-quality data for our partners. Therefore, we need to ensure that we alone train each project participant.
We have limited project equipment, and a lot of rivers to sample! Please send equipment back as soon as you've completed sampling.
Being a part of a commercial group does not immediately disqualify you from joining this project. If you are a member of a commercial group, guide service, etc., sampling should be taken on as a personal project rather than as part of group programming.
