30×30 Partnership Summit Field Trip

Big Laguna Lake

On Friday, August 15 2025, join us for a Volunteer Field Day at Big Laguna Lake just 1 hour outside San Diego!

Friday, August 15th, 2025 | 9:00 AM – 1:30 PM
Location: Big Laguna Lake – Sunset Trailhead (Meet here)

Join us for a volunteer insect collection field day and help protect California’s unique biodiversity! Volunteers will receive training and equipment before heading into the Cleveland National Forest to collect insect samples. California is one of 36 global biodiversity hotspots—regions rich in species but facing serious threats from climate change, wildfires, and habitat loss. As ecosystems shift, gathering data on plants, fungi, invertebrates, and animals is essential for guiding conservation action. By volunteering, you can be part of the solution!

This event is part of Adventure Scientists’ year-long California Biodiversity Project, in partnership with Stillwater Sciences and the California Institute for Biodiversity. With volunteer support, we’re collecting insect data across a wide region—areas too remote or expensive for scientists to access alone. All samples will be submitted to the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County for species identification. No experience is necessary. Toolkits and lunch will be provided free of charge! RSVP now to reserve your spot.

More Details on the Project:

Find more details on the project here. Partnering with the California Institute for Biodiversity, the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History, and Stillwater Sciences, this project is part of California’s Pathways Strategy to conserve 30% of California’s biodiversity by 2030.

What You’ll Learn and Do:

  • How to safely collect insects and preserve them for the biodiversity inventory using Adventure Scientists provided gear!
  • How your adventure supports real conservation science
  • How to choose adventurous hikes that help biodiversity research

What to Expect on Field Day:

9:00 AM – 10:00 AM: Start the day with some breakfast, and learn about the project research and how you’ll be involved! We will go over:

  • How to properly collect and document biodiversity data
  • Which trails are permitted for sampling
  • Techniques for proper insect sampling
  • How your data contributes to conservation efforts

10:00 AM – 1:00 PM: Head into the field to collect insect samples in a guided group, in your own small group, or by yourself.

1:00 PM – 1:30 AM: Celebrate your impact and drop off samples.
