Getting You the Data You Need

Data collected by volunteer citizen scientists provides numerous benefits to citizens and researchers, but citizen science data can face problems with spatial, temporal, taxonomic, and sample effort bias. Adventure Scientists' model for data collection affords researchers and volunteers the benefits of citizen science, but does not sacrifice data quality, nor does it require overly large datasets or complex data screening techniques. We mitigate biases common to citizen science data by working with partner researchers to design protocols that designate sampling effort and timing, and include careful parameter and site selection.

Through our
advisors and various partnerships, we are able to integrate cutting-edge field-collection technologies into your research. Whether it's drones, sensors, camera traps, or machine learning, we can help design the most time- and cost-effective way to get you the data you need.

Once a project is active we have a proven track record of attracting national and international press. Our media team can help broaden your outreach and impact.

Not Your Average Volunteer

We have a global network of skilled outdoor adventurers, from which we recruit volunteers with specialized expertise that allows them to access and work in the most ideal environment for your research question. We train each volunteer thoroughly to carry out the protocol, we carefully oversee data collection with rigorous quality control, and we monitor data quality throughout the project lifespan. Previous research has shown that this approach––using appropriate and thorough protocols and rigorous volunteer training and oversight––produces citizen science data of quality equal to those collected by experts.

Through their participation in our projects, Adventure Scientists volunteers become informed ambassadors for the species, places and issues with which they work, all around the world. See the starting point of each expedition on the map below.

How We Operate

We operate on a fee-for-service basis. Our pricing is dependent on the number of volunteers, how specialized they need to be, timeline, and the technicality of protocols. We are a 501c.3 nonprofit organization.

What to Expect

We're eager to hear about how we can help you get the data you need. As you think about how we could help, there are three project criteria to consider:

1. The project must address an environmental or human health issue to which unlocking a solution has previously been data-limited.
2. There must be a clear pathway from data collection to lasting impact.
3. There must be a clear need for the outdoor community.
