Global Pollinators Project

We are seeking adventurers from around the world with strong skills in backcountry travel (e.g., hiking, trail running, backpacking, mountain biking) to conduct butterfly and wildflower surveys. This project is ideal for adventurers who are thru-hiking or biking.

As a volunteer for this project, you will:

  • Establish field sites and collect data on your own time and from any location of your choosing, so long that data is collected at least one mile from the nearest paved road.
  • Use the app iNaturalist to record and upload photographs of butterflies and their host plants, as well as general site observations.

Please complete the application below and we will be in touch!

Global Pollinators Project Application Form

Thank you for taking the time to apply to our Global Pollinators Project! We are excited by the prospect of you helping us conduct baseline surveying of wild pollinators from remote habitats.

Please review the following critical qualifications before continuing on to the application.
By checking these boxes, I affirm that:
Our mission is to collect the highest-quality data for our partners. Therefore, we need to ensure that we alone train each project participant.
Being a part of a commercial group does not immediately disqualify you from joining this project. If you are a member of a commercial group, guide service, etc., sampling should be taken on as a personal project, rather than a part of group programming.

Trip Details

Press COMMAND on a Mac keyboard or Ctrl on PC to select multiple countries.
Example: Monteverde, Costa Rica
This includes all travel costs, food, and gear necessary for this specific trip.
Example: I am bikepacking along the Big Bear Trail for approximately 2 weeks.
While we recommend that you always travel with a partner in the backcountry, we are willing to accept solo participants.
Example: I completed a 3 day backpacking trip in the Sierra Mountains. I am CPR and First Aid certified.
Previous experience in field data collection is preferred but not required for this project.
This project requires you to record and upload data using a mobile app. All volunteers must have at least an iPhone 6 or equivalent Android model to ensure the highest quality data.
Example: Samsung Galaxy S7

Create Your iNaturalist Account

Before completing the application, we need you to visit iNaturalist.org and create an account. iNaturalist is the app you will use to record and upload butterfly and wildflower observations.

We will not be able to accept you to this project until you have created an account. Once you have an account, we will invite you to the Pollinators project within iNaturalist - assuming the rest of your trip plans fit our criteria.

After you've visited iNaturalist and created your account, please provide us with your username in the space below.
Make sure that this is the same username that you registered on iNaturalist.org!
